Update from Sammys Mom Jen!

Sammy update 8/31/13: brought in donuts & bagels for Samuel's awesome nursing staff. They were almost as happy to see us as Sam was! He had a great breakfast, & much thanks to Toni & Mary for keeping him entertained. Archie & I had great conversation with Sam; he wanted to discuss his accident & Albany Med hospital stay. As expected, he remembers nothing of either. Sam is happy to know that he's ...out of the coma. He is starting to believe all of us who tell him his progress is amazing. Today was a day off from therapies, so it was all about visiting, eating, & resting. Sam started walking to the rest room with a nursing assist (instead of wheeling in there). That was his idea. More incredible news tomorrow after he rocks therapies!

Sammy update 8/30/13: yesterday before Archie, Jared & I left Sunnyview, Samuel walked the stairs in the gym with no assistance! He also practiced getting in & out of a car; they have a small-body truck-cab, for this purpose. He did great for his first try! He did quite a bit of walking & really impressed his brother & Archie (& me, as always!). The Silent Auction was absolutely incredible. So muc...h love for our Sam. Today, Sam did such a great job with eating that he got his diet upgraded! He received a massage in OT - Sarah is so good to him. We have been cleared to take visitors by the good Dr. Somaio. However, I also need to clear it with Sam! He's been too exhausted to respond to questions today. It's been a terrific & productive week.

Benefit and Saratogian!

Burlington benefit show is tonight, information can be found here!

Also Sammy was featured in the Saratogian today as well!

best update!

Sammy update 8/28/13: Samuel got moved to a new room today which was at my request. We now have a private room which is larger than some hotel units where I've stayed! It's also still right by the nurses station. Sam did quite a bit of talking during OT today, along with lots of walking, standing, stretching & reaching. & some push ups! In PT it was all about stairs & walking, but he'd gotten quite tired out. He is resting now, & his therapy day is done. He looks awesome in the shorts that were a gift from Aunt Melissa. Sam aced his coma recovery test. He got the highest score that his PT has ever seen! You could say he's out of the coma. But we have a long road ahead.

Sammy Update 8/27/13

Sammy update 8/27/13: Samuel is working so hard! I know I say that everyday - but it's TRUE! He has a nurse call light that he is able to use. This morning he ate all of his breakfast, & greeted the aide Toni with a "good morning, Toni". He hadn't seen her in 4 days! He walked a lot, with only his PT Kim, no extra assist & no wheelchair along as back-up. He walked stairs in the gym twice today. In OT he worked on hand/arm motor skills. He is resting after a very busy therapy day. I couldn't be more proud. It's an emotional roller coaster (for me as well as Sam), but he is improving by an incredible amount everyday. No one in the world is more determined that Sam!

Sammy Update 8/26/13

Sammy update 8/26/13: I cannot believe it's been one month since Samuel's accident. All that he's accomplished in the past 2 & 1/2 weeks is unbelievable. Today he did great with his breakfast & lunch. He walked 475 feet in PT - with only one assist instead of two! He also used a seated stepper.
He did some great stretching in OT, but was very tired from PT & staying up in his chair all day yesterday. Sam is improving everyday. We had a nice visit with Kahla & Anthony DeMarco. Other than that, Sam's been resting comfortably this afternoon. We wish it was sunnier out - hope you all ad a good day!

Sunday, August 25, 2013

Sammy update 8/25/13

Sammy update 8/25/13: Samuel had a short therapy day today (only 1 & 1/2 hours vs. the 3 hr. weekday schedule). He is doing a great job eating his meals & feeling pretty good today. He is wearing his glasses & can even read! He worked hard in PT & OT, and is exceeding everyone's expectations. He is done with therapies for today, so his job is to eat & rest. And we plan in getting outside again today. We hope you all are having a wonderful Sunday!

8/24/13 update from Samuel's mother, Jen:

Sammy update 8/24/13: Samuel had a full day of therapies yesterday & has today off, thankfully. He received his first vegan-purée dinner last night, which was quite bland as the veggies were accidentally omitted. It arrived late - was accidentally delivered to the wrong room. it was missing the requested seasoning! In the end, understandably, he didn't eat much of it. It will take awhile, honestly, for Sam to regain the strength to eat a full meal. So, in the meantime, we can rely on tube feeds to supplement. Today's meals were much more complete & concise, thanks to the quick action of Shannon in Sunnyview's Nutritional Department. Today Sam is catching up on rest & working on eating, which is tiring! He had some pain at his feeding-tube site, which is currently being corrected. Sam's attitude is amazing; even though he's experiencing some sadness at realizing, daily, what happened to bring him here. We've been promoting the concept of his remarkable recovery in 4 short weeks. He's incredible, brave, smart & strong.

awesome update and info. on visiting : )

Sammy update 8/23/13 from  Samuels mother Jen: Samuel & I attended the "therapy dogs visit" @ Sunnyview last night, and we both enjoyed it. Sam had a great time petting all 3 of the lovely canines. He was totally engaged. Sam is able to answer yes/no by nodding or shaking his head. He can also say yes or no, but it takes alot of prompting. I try to go easy on him where speaking is concerned. Today in PT he walking 1 & 1/2... times of yesterday's distance! He's really pushing himself. I'm now trying to remind him not to overdo. Sam has been moved to a vegan-purรฉe diet from tube feed! He's eating well & obviously tolerating food by mouth.
I spoke with Dr. Somaio today about visitors. He recommends that we hold off on friends visiting until after Labor Day. Sam is experiencing "post-traumatic amnesia", which is totally normal for someone in the end stage of a coma. It means that he doesn't remember one day from the next. Having friends visit could be counter-productive, & possibly detrimental. I hope you all understand. I have every faith in Dr. Somaio & Sunnyview. I hope everyone is well enjoying this beautiful day.

8/22/13 update

Sammy update 8/22/13: Samuel was exhausted yesterday afternoon. He took a nap between therapies & we got outside for a walk. Then, at the last PT of the day, when given a choice of exercise to try, he did not choose the easiest! This morning, when prompted, Sam spoke to his LPN! (and to me, when prompted he said, "Hi Mom" with a smile!) In PT today, he walked 125 feet, TWICE. All this walking & talking has tired him out! I am so proud of all that Sam is doing; I'm amazed and inspired by the incredible staff here @ Sunnyview.

Update from Sammys mom Jen:

Sammy update 8/21/13: Yesterday afternoon in OT Samuel amazed everyone in the gym. His therapist thought she would have him lay on a wedge -shaped cushion on the padded bench. Sam decided to straighten his arms into a push-up position & he put all of his weight in his arms! All the therapists in the gym were in shock - & so was I. Sam was laughing as his OT (Sarah) was transferring him, & he spoke! He was wide awake when his brother Jared Anthony DeMarco came to visit - it was wonderful to see them laughing together. Today in PT, Sam walked 75 feet! He's doing amazing things & I couldn't be more proud!

Tuesday, August 20, 2013

Update from Samuel's mom Jen 8/20/13:

Sammy update 8/20/13: Yesterday afternoon in PT, Samuel used the "standing frame". It's a chest-height table with a slow-hydraulic to assist him to standing. He stood at it for about 10 minutes, & used "thumbs up" to answer questions. I was facing him. I thought I'd cry when he gave thumbs up for "is the lady in front of you your Mom?" Today in PT he walked! He had 2 assistants, but he walked 20 feet! Also did a bit of sitting balance & standing. In Speech Therapy, he spoke! He said "no" when Cristina asked if he was laughing at her. I said, "holy crap!" Then all 3 of us laughed. All this success has worn him out. I took him outside for a quick walk & now he's resting until therapies resume @ 3pm. Sam is still considered to be in a coma, but functioning very well. I have high hopes for him - he amazes me everyday!

Silent Auction Saratoga Springs!

Sammy update 8/19/13:

Sammy update 8/19/13: Samuel did alot of resting yesterday. He only had 1&1/2 hours of therapy Sunday, so he had time to rest up from all the had work he'd been doing. Today we're back to a busy schedule & he continues to impress! In OT & PT he worked at weight bearing & arm and neck strengthening. He's also assisting the therapist in lifts & transfers. In Speech he made major progress in swallowing & drinking! Huge improvement just since Friday! Sam is laughing, smiling & attempting to speak. I'm so proud of all that he's accomplishing. He's unbelievable.

Sunday, August 18, 2013

Sammy update 8/18/13:

Sammy update 8/18/13: Samuel did great all day yesterday - but was exhausted by our trips outside & the hard work that he exhibited all day. He was quite tired & in bed by 3 pm! Slept well. This morning when his nurse Kathy was getting him ready for the day, he tried talking to her! She couldn't understand what he was saying - it was his first word in 23 days. Lots of smiling. Did great @ speech & OT this morning: weight bearing, fine motor skills. We took him outside for another walk & he's resting again before PT. if the sun comes out we'll get outside again. He has an amazing attitude.

Saturday, August 17, 2013

Sammy update 8/17/13

Sammy update 8/17/13: Samuel's speech therapies yesterday (he had 3 of them!) went very well. He is tolerating nectar/purรฉe fruit juices pretty well, in very small doses. Last evening he was smiling quite a bit; when Archie left, Sam laughe...d at him! This morning, we were using his "yes/no" board (see pic) to ask if he wanted to go outside. (He normally can only "stare" at one of the words). He pointed to the word "yes" & gave us the thumbs up! It was awesome! We took another trip outside after lunch & he has learned to grab & pull his face towel. He's trying to wipe his face. He can use his right arm almost as well as his left. He can move his left leg (not his right yet). He Has really shown off for us today & we couldn't be prouder!

8/16/13

Sammy update 8/16/13: BIG news - this morning Samuel got his artificial trache removed! He's breathing well & his vital signs are perfect. Yesterday afternoon in Speech Therapy, he was able to swallow a little apple sauce & thickened cranberry juice. The days events wiped Sam out early, & he was asleep by 3. He pepped up a bit in the evening. Today, he was quite alert in the morning (especially after having the trache out), & was smiling & "yelling" as Sarah, his OT was wheeling him to the gym! Did some upright sitting, standing, & attempting to hold up his head. In Speech this morning he did more swallowing of purรฉe foods. Sammy's tired now, but has Speech shortly.

Awesome update from Jen! 8/15/13

Sammy update 8/15/13: Yesterday, during PT, Samuel smiled & laughed! Twice! It was awesome. He mumbled (really, it was quiet throat-clearing) most of the day. He laughed again after Archie arrived in the evening. Today he was attempting to talk during OT! & more laughter during OT & PT. In PT, they had him standing with assists, but no apparatus. Sam's therapists (& mom) are very encouraged by the progress he's making. His PT is disappointed she'll be on vacation next week! Sammy is resting now, & has an hour of speech therapy @ 1:30. He may have the metal trache out tomorrow. He's doing well.

Wednesday, August 14, 2013

Sammy update 8/14/13 from Jen:

Sammy update 8/14/13: Samuel is doing very well with his metal trache. The staff here is currently testing his breathing by plugging it, & Sam has "re-learned" how to breathe through his nose. Yes, scary. Yes, amazing. Yesterday, he let out a big, vocal, YAWN! It was the best noise I've ever heard. If things keep going this well in the respiratory-wise, he'll have the artificial trache out in no time. Today he had some therapies this AM, & more this afternoon. I'm working mornings, & it beneficial for me to attend therapies with him. So the amazing staff here @ Sunnyview is attempting to accommodate my schedule. They have a Wellness Center here that I can use. Time for BabyMom to get back into shape, too!

Sammy update 8/13/13 from Jen:

Sammy update 8/13/13: Samuel had his first full day of therapies yesterday. It was exhausting for him & educational for both of us! He has OT, PT & speech for an hour each day, with OT & speech being broken into 30-minute increments. In OT, Sam was able to follow an object with his eyes. In PT he sat upright on a padded bench for 5 minutes (with the therapist behind him, holding up his head & shoulders)! He also "stood up": there's a table that he was strapped to & they tip it slowly; they were able to bring him to a 45- degree angle, close to upright. In Speech, he got a bit of oral care, face massage & tried eating a little apple sauce. We'll continue working on that. (Sam remains on tube feeding for now, so he is getting his nutrients). Today Sam had his original trache replaced with a metal one. This is standard practice. Once he wakes & starts talking it or removable. I can't wait to hear his beautiful voice.

Donations, Benefits and General Update.

As most of you have noticed a lot has happened recently. Samuel has been moved to one of the best rehabilitation centers in the area and started physical training. He is still in a coma but going through "periods of wakefulness" which means that's he's especially reactive/responsive. No visitors besides family are allowed at Sunnyview for the first two weeks. Afterwards visiting hours are from 5pm-8pm to allow time for all of the hard work Sammy is doing.

Shane Artsy has done an amazing job putting together the non profit;

Please keep Sammy in your thoughts!

Sammy update 8/12/13 From Jen:

After working his butt off Saturday, Samuel had a well-deserved day of relaxation Sunday. He had his eyes closed most of the day, but that is par for the course: a couple days of progress followed by a day of tiredness. His wonderful weekend nurse, Angela, suggested I take Sam outside! What a treat that was for both of us, fresh air & sunshine for a couple of hours. He is up in his reclinable wheelchair for a few hours everyday, dressed & looking amazing. Beginning today (Monday), he'll have 5 days of therapies. Each day will consist of a total of 3 hours of work. Sam is strong & he'll do great!

Sammy update 8/10/13 from Jen

what a shocker it was, yesterday morning, to find out Samuel's transfer to Sunnyview Rehabilitation Center would be happening that day! We arrived (Sam: via ambulance, me: via car with Archie) around 1:30pm He was settled in his room, & Archie & I had met with the Dr., RNs & Social Worker by 3pm. Grabbed Sam some clothes @ Target, as they say they'll have him up (yes up; even... in a coma state!) & getting PT & OT today! He was recuperating from the trip all day. VISITING HOURS: so, for at least the first 2 weeks, staff request visits only by parents & siblings. He'll need to really save up his strength for the hard work he'll be doing. "Babyfriends": Friend me if you haven't already. I check FB on my phone constantly. (Jennifer Babymom DeMarco) We are on the road to recovery now!

8/9/13 Update from Jennifer - Part Two!

Samuel Babydude Yager is transferring to Sunnyview Rehabilitation Center TODAY! No visitors today after noontime please, as we will be packing up & moving! I will post an update tomorrow AM from Sam's new digs.

8/9/13 Update from Jennifer

Sammy update 8/9/13: as Samuel was not being medically treated as an ICU patient, he was moved from the SICU to the Neuro unit yesterday. Sam receives nursing care every hour. They check his vitals every 2 hours, but he is not hooked to monitors. The biggest concern is that Sam can't communicate yet (he is still in a coma, with periods of wakefulness); his trache is so new, & he gets very worked up when he coughs up anything (out of the trache). his coughs are violent & wear him out. Sammy did wonderfully last night. The staff on M5 are doing everything they can to make Sam (& his Mom) comfortable. His room # is M-523. Visiting hours are Noon-8:30. We will be here until we transfer to Sunnyview, waiting for paperwork to be processed. Happy Friday - wish it wasn't raining!

Thursday, August 8, 2013

8/8/13 Update from Jennifer

Sammy update 8/8/13: Wow - what a great day Samuel had yesterday! He was able to get his right eye almost completely opened. He did great with his neurological tests ("open your eyes squeeze my hand, wiggle your toes"). I swear he nodded "yes" to questions I asked. He reached for my hand & held it for much of the day. The nurses are putting him in his recliner for a few hours per day. He is approved medically to transfer from AMC to rehab - just waiting on paperwork. Last night he even smiled at Shane Michael Sanchez Jr.! He's doing so well - your prayers are helping!๐ŸŒ„

8/7/13 Update

Update from Samuels mother Jen: Samuel's procedures yesterday went very well. Without the breathing tube & strap, we can see his whole face again! The ventilator is currently hooked to his trache to assist his breathing. Regarding the "peg" (tube feed @ abdomen), he is on the same food product as before. It is as close to vegan as possible while still sustaining his nutrients & well-being. Please do not discuss the fact that it is not "true vegan" in front of him. Sammy had begun opening his right eye. It is weak, but he's trying. Also, Tim, the night RN, reported that Sam was squeezing with both hands on command!๐Ÿ˜ŠHave a wonderful day everyone - I know Sam & I will!

Saratoga Auction Update

We are happy to have confirmed Spring Street Gallery (http://www.springstreetgallerysaratoga.org/) as the venue for the Saratoga Springs Babydude auction on Thursday August 29th! We are still finalizing the time, but we look forward to seeing you there and will update the blog once we have confirmed a time! We have already received some incredible support from local businesses and artists, but keep it coming, we can use and all the support and donations we can get. Donations can be dropped off at my house in downtown Saratoga for either the Saturday August 17th Albany auction at the UAG or for the Saratoga auction. Out of towners can also mail in any donations. Please email me for my address, or if you need anything to be picked up I am happy to arrange that as well. Talyahalpern@gmail.com : ) If you would like to make a donation for the auctions please refer to the previous “Art Auction Update” post below for details.

We are psyched for all the art and donations but don't forget we need to get some bidders to come too! Please invite friends, family, coworkers, anyone who might be interested in coming and contributing. Much Love, Strength, and Blessings to all.

Update from Samuels wonderul mother Jen ❤:

Sammy update 8/6/13: Samuel was battling a low-grade fever & a staph infection yesterday afternoon. He required a lot of rest, which came in between coughing jags. He's doing better on both fronts. Today, he will have the "trache & peg" surgery at noon. They will do a temporary tracheostomy, which will allow him to breathe more easily & comfortably - especially since he won't have a tube down his... throat! The "peg" is a feeding tube that goes directly into the abdomen; it's also temporary. These are steps in the direction of preparing for rehab. We may transfer to rehab (Sunnyview) as soon as this Friday! Today's visits: it's fine to visit before 11am or after 5pm, due to the surgeries. Please limit visits to 15 minutes. Expect Sam to be extra groggy this evening. I'm here all day as always!๐Ÿ˜Š

Sammy update 8/5/13: Wow, Monday already! Yesterday was a rough day for Samuel. He had a low-grade fever, and quite a bit of coughing. The good news there is that he is coughing on his own; unfortunately, coughing while on a respirator is similar to gagging, as he has a tube down his throat. It exhausts him. His fever has subsided! Hopefully his cough will do the same. If you come to the hospita...l, please keep your visit with him to 15 minutes max. (Remember, the clock in the wall doesn't work - but there's a clock in the bottom right of his Vital Signs monitor). If nursing staff steps in the room, PLEASE step out. You may talk to Sammy. You may touch his arm, but please use hand sanitizer @ SICU doors before entering. Thanks SO much!๐Ÿ”†

Art Auction Update

Hey there folks! As Samuel makes more and more progress each day, we're trying to follow his example, so I'm happy to update you all on our silent auction progress.

A few days ago I posted that we were planning on having a silent auction of your donated artwork to raise money for Samuel and his family. Over the past couple days I've received a lot of interest and some great ideas, so we've made a slight change to the plan; we'll now be having multiple auctions around the area.

The first auction will be on Saturday, August 17th in Albany at the Upstate Artists Guild, 247 Lark Street. (Thanks Rana!) Right now, we are also planning auctions for Troy, Saratoga, and potentially elsewhere, but we don't have details on those yet.

I think the best way to distribute the art over the course of the different events is to put it up largely in the order it is received, giving preference to the most local artists. That said, I'd obviously rather have too much artwork for the first show than not enough, so please try to get yours in ASAP. A tentative submission deadline for the first auction is Tuesday the 13th, but the earlier, the better.

Submissions should include (if applicable) the following information:
Artist, Title, Year, Medium, Size, Estimated $ Value, and $tarting Bid
We'd also love if you have business cards, post cards, websites, email addresses, etc. to display with your work.

It would be helpful if everyone could email me (iamportia@gmail.com) with a general description of the piece, especially format and size, so I can begin to get an idea of the numbers. Also, it would make things easier if all two-dimensional work was ready to hang.

For artists in this area, we can exchange info on how to drop stuff off or have it picked up. If you're out of town and need to mail your piece, I will email you back an address.

For all of you Bostonians, I plan on being in Boston this Friday for the SAMMYFEST benefit show (psyched on it!), so I'll be happy to pick up your items there. Again, email me so I know how much space I'll need.

<3 <3 <3 Thank you all sooooo much! I think we can make a big difference! <3 <3 <3

Update 8/4/13

Sammy update 8/4/13: Yesterday Samuel showed off a couple of new tricks during his Dr. Visit: moved his toe, moved each hand to his face, followed movement with his left eye, although not opening his eyes on his own. During the day, he occasionally had his left eye open slightly. Around 7pm he opened his eye all the way & seemed to have some recognition! When Shane Michael Sanchez Jr., (Sam's best friend) arrived, Sam's eye was opened HUGE! He just amazing! working hard.impressing us all๐Ÿ˜Š

Update 8/3/13

Sammy update from his mother Jen: (8/3/13)
Samuel did quite a bit of moving around yesterday - especially with his arms, shoulders & head. He had some discomfort as the respirator tubing needed clearing often. He hit the neurologist, Amy, twice. Its a "response", so she considered it a good thing! He pushed the nurse, Megan also! Very strong on left side especially. Sam worked hard yesterday & rested well last night without issue. "Obviousness"reminder: if you have a cold or fever, please don't visit until your healthy. Non-medical news: Rich & the Four Seasons staff sent a wonderful basket full of goodies for Sam's friends & family. The SICU staff requests that we don't eat in the room, but grab any of these wonderful treats & bring into the waiting room. Thanks for your continued prayers.

Update 8/2/13

Samuel update from the incredible Babymom Jen: (8/2/13):
Yesterday was a very productive day. The surgeon decided to take out the ICP probe. They discontinued sedation after testing that Sam wouldn't need it. That went well. They removed the probe around 7pm. Sammy started moving his arms & head. He is in the slow process of waking up. During the Neurologist visit this morning, he "responded to a command" for the first time! Dr. said, "wiggle your toes" & he did so - instantly! It will take some time; but we're getting there! He's so strong! I'm so proud!

Call for Artists!

As long as I have known him, Samuel has surrounded himself with musicians, artists, and otherwise creative/talented/genius/virtuosic individuals. He's also been a source of encouragement and inspiration to so many of us. The recently announced benefit shows are going to be awesome, but let's not neglect the visual arts!

We are in the early stages of planning a silent auction in Saratoga, and we need you beautiful people to donate art. We're accepting all media, as long as you can get it to us. While we are still figuring out dates and venues, it would be great if individuals interested in donating work could contact me by email. Eventually we'll need the usual pertinent info (title/artist/medium/size) as well as a $ amount for the minimum starting bid.

Additionally we're looking for raffle items-- gift certificates, tee shirts, music lessons... Anything you have to offer!  I'd also love to hear from our friends in Boston, Brooklyn & Beyond about doing art auctions thereabouts.

If you have any brilliant ideas, do not hesitate to email me, especially with information about a venue or sponsors.
